The local football community is united in grief following the sudden passing of Davy Flynn, the deeply respected and much-loved Chairman of Broomhedge Maghaberry Football Club, who passed away on February 2, 2026. His death has left an immeasurable void not only within his club, but across the wider amateur football family that he served with passion, humility, and unwavering commitment for so many years.
Davy was the very definition of a football stalwart. He embodied everything grassroots football stands for — dedication, selflessness, loyalty, and a genuine love for the game and the people within it. His tireless work behind the scenes helped shape Broomhedge Maghaberry FC into more than just a club; it became a community, a second home for countless players, coaches, and volunteers. His influence stretched far beyond the touchline, and his legacy will continue to be felt for generations.
Tributes have poured in from clubs near and far, including Lower Maze Football Club, who expressed their shock and sadness at the loss of a man whose contribution formed part of the bedrock of local amateur football. To many, Davy was a mentor, a leader, and a friend — someone who always put others first and worked quietly to ensure the club and its people thrived.
Away from football, Davy was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Jean, a proud and loving father to Andrea, Laura, and Holly, and a cherished Papa, brother, and friend. Those closest to him remember his warmth, kindness, and steady presence — qualities that made him so deeply admired both on and off the pitch.
Davy, of Derryvolgie Park, Lambeg, will be laid to rest following a Funeral Service at Drumbo Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 7, at 12 noon, with interment afterwards. Friends are welcome to pay their respects at the family home on Thursday and Friday from 3pm to 7pm. In keeping with the family’s wishes, family flowers only, with donations in lieu kindly directed to NI Chest, Heart & Stroke and NI Air Ambulance.
As the football community mourns this profound loss, we remember Davy Flynn not only for what he did, but for who he was — a true servant of the game, a pillar of his community, and a man whose life made a lasting difference.
