DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham community is grappling with shock and sorrow following a deadly incident early Wednesday morning that left two people dead inside an apartment, an event authorities believe may have been a murder-suicide.

Durham police identified the victims as Shakeva Dixon, 27, of Durham, and Maurice Langston, 36, of Goldsboro. Officers responded to the scene at Crestview Apartments, located off Crest Street, where both individuals were found inside an apartment suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Dixon and Langston were formerly in a relationship and shared two children together. While officials have not released information regarding the children’s ages or their whereabouts at the time of the incident, police confirmed that ensuring the children’s safety and well-being remains a top priority as the investigation continues.

Based on preliminary evidence, authorities believe the case involves a murder-suicide, though police emphasized that the investigation is still active and no final conclusions have been reached. Detectives have not disclosed details about what may have led up to the shooting or the sequence of events inside the apartment.

Forensic teams remained on scene for several hours, carefully documenting the apartment and surrounding area. Investigators collected evidence, photographed the interior, and examined a vehicle parked near the unit. The area was secured with police tape as officers worked methodically to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Police stated that more than nine hours were spent processing the scene and reviewing evidence.

The loss of two lives in such tragic circumstances has deeply affected the Durham community, raising renewed concern about the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of prevention, awareness, and early intervention.
